What Does a Tyre & Wheel Service Include?
The work required depends on what the vehicle is doing and the condition of the tyres when it arrives. We normally begin by looking across the full tyre surface rather than just the outside edge that is easy to see. Uneven wear on the inner shoulder, for example, can easily go unnoticed until the tyre is already badly worn. Tyre pressure is also checked against the recommendation for the vehicle rather than using one generic pressure for every car.

Wheel Alignment & Uneven Tyre Wear
One of the most common signs of an alignment problem is uneven tyre wear. You might notice the inside edge of a tyre wearing much faster than the outside, the steering wheel sitting slightly off-centre when travelling straight, or the vehicle tending to move towards one side of the road.
Alignment can change after normal wear in steering and suspension components, impact with potholes or kerbs, or repairs involving suspension components. That does not mean every vehicle that pulls to one side automatically needs an alignment. Tyre pressure, tyre condition and steering or suspension faults can create similar symptoms.
We prefer to assess the vehicle first so the adjustment actually addresses the cause of the problem. Correct alignment can help the tyres wear more evenly and maintain the steering behaviour intended for the vehicle.
Wheel Balancing & Steering Vibration
If you feel vibration through the steering wheel, particularly as road speed increases, wheel balance is one possible cause. A tyre and wheel assembly is not perfectly uniform in weight. Small balancing weights are used to compensate for those differences so the wheel can rotate smoothly.
If a weight is lost, a tyre is replaced, or the balance changes, vibration may become noticeable. However, not every steering vibration comes from wheel balance. A damaged tyre, bent wheel or worn steering or suspension component can produce a similar feeling. That is why we inspect the wheel and tyre rather than assuming balancing is always the answer.
Signs Your Tyres or Wheels Need Service
Tyre problems often give some warning before they become severe. What matters is noticing when the vehicle no longer feels the way it normally does.

Tyre Tread & Condition
Tread depth affects the tyre’s ability to maintain contact with the road, particularly when the surface is wet. In Victoria, tyres must have at least 1.5 mm of tread in the principal grooves, excluding the tread-wear indicators. Waiting until a tyre is exactly at the legal limit is not necessarily the best maintenance strategy, especially if the tread is wearing unevenly.
Tread depth is only one part of the inspection. We also look for issues such as cracking, cuts, bulges, exposed damage or abnormal wear across the inner and outer edges of the tyre.
Uneven tread can provide useful information. Wear concentrated in the centre or shoulders may suggest a pressure issue, while wear on one side may indicate an alignment or suspension problem.The pattern often tells us more than simply knowing how many kilometres the tyre has travelled.
Tyre Pressure Matters
Correct tyre pressure affects much more than how firm the tyre feels. A tyre running significantly above or below the recommended pressure can wear differently and can change the vehicle’s handling.
There is no single pressure that should be used for every tyre or vehicle. The appropriate cold pressure is normally specified by the vehicle manufacturer and can usually be found on the tyre placard, often inside the driver’s door opening.
Pressure can also vary according to vehicle load and operating conditions. If one tyre repeatedly loses pressure after being adjusted, the cause should be investigated rather than simply adding air every few days.
Tyre Rotation
Tyres do not necessarily wear at the same rate on every corner of the vehicle. Front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicles place different loads on their tyres, and driving style can also affect the wear pattern. Rotating the tyres can help manage differences in wear when the tyre type and vehicle configuration allow it.
There is no need to force one universal rotation interval onto every vehicle. The appropriate interval and rotation pattern should take into account the manufacturer’s recommendations, tyre design, drivetrain and actual wear condition. Some directional or staggered tyre setups also have restrictions on how the tyres can be moved around the vehicle. That is why rotation should be based on the specific car rather than treated as exactly the same job every time.
