How Much Does a Car Service Cost in Epping?

There is no single answer to what a car service costs in Epping, because the price follows what your car needs. A basic service on a small petrol hatchback sits at the lower end. A logbook or major service on a diesel ute, a European car or a hybrid costs more, because it takes more oil, more parts and more workshop time. At Royal Automotive we quote every job from your vehicle details, its service schedule and an inspection, and you get that figure before any work starts. This guide explains what you are paying for, what moves the price, and how to get a firm quote.

What Is Included in a Basic, Logbook and Major Service

The word “service” covers three quite different jobs. Knowing which one your car is due for is the first step to understanding any quote.

A basic service at our workshop is built around an engine oil and filter change, followed by a general inspection. We report what we find and nothing extra is repaired without your say so.

A logbook service follows the manufacturer schedule for your exact model. We check the logbook and Repco Navigator to confirm what is due, then complete or stamp the book. If your car is still under warranty, our guide to logbook servicing and your new car warranty explains why you do not have to go back to the dealer.

A major service is where quotes vary the most. We inspect items before replacing them, so a part is not swapped just because the history is unclear.

What Affects the Price of a Car Service

Two cars parked side by side in our Epping workshop can have very different service bills. These are the things that move the number.

Make and model

European and prestige cars often need specific oils, filters and procedures. Common Japanese and Korean models are usually simpler and cheaper to service.

Engine size and type

A large petrol engine or a diesel holds more oil than a small four cylinder, and diesels can add fuel filter work.

Oil specification

Modern engines need a precise oil grade. We commonly use Penrite and Castrol, matched to your vehicle, and full synthetic costs more than a basic mineral oil.

Parts due at that interval

Spark plugs, air and cabin filters, brake fluid and coolant each fall due at different points. A service where several line up costs more than one where none do.

Hybrid systems

A hybrid still has an engine to service, plus battery cooling and high voltage checks that need the right equipment. See our hybrid car repairs and servicing page for what that involves.

Condition and history

A car that has been serviced on time is cheaper to look after. Skipped services tend to show up later as bigger jobs.

Why We Quote Each Car Instead of Publishing a Price List

You will see plenty of “car service from” prices advertised around Melbourne. We choose not to work that way. A headline price is written for the cheapest car on the road, and most cars are not that car.

A price that ignores your car is an advertisement. A quote built from your car is a figure you can plan around.

When you contact us we ask for the make, model, year and kilometres, check the schedule, and give you a quote for that service. If the inspection turns up something else, such as worn brake pads or rotors, we explain it, price it and wait for your approval. You can go ahead on the day or plan it for later.

Dealer vs Independent: Where the Cost Difference Comes From

Dealerships and independent workshops can both carry out a logbook service. The gap in price usually comes down to overheads and labour rates, not the quality of the work. A dealership carries a showroom, a large site and brand requirements, and those costs flow through to the service desk.

An independent workshop like ours runs leaner. As a Repco Authorised Service workshop and a VACC member, we fit parts that meet the required specification, and eligible work may be covered by Repco nationwide warranty arrangements. You also speak to the people who worked on your car. We have written more about this in why Melbourne drivers are leaving dealerships.

Hidden Costs to Ask About Before You Book

Whichever workshop you choose, a few questions up front will save you an awkward conversation at pick-up.

  • Does the quote include GST, oil, filters and workshop supplies, or are those added later?
  • Which oil grade and brand is being used, and does it meet the specification for my engine?
  • Will you call me before doing any work that is not on the quote?
  • Is diagnostic time for a warning light charged separately from the service?
  • Are large scheduled items, such as a timing belt replacement, included or quoted on their own?
  • Is there a charge for a courtesy car or for pick-up and drop-off?
Worth knowing

The cheapest service is rarely the cheapest year of motoring. A low advertised price that leaves out the correct oil or skips inspection items tends to cost more by the next service.

How to Book and What to Bring

1

Send us your details

Make, model, year, kilometres and rego if you have it handy. Book a service online or call the workshop and we will confirm what is due.

2

Bring the logbook

Along with the locking wheel nut key if your car has one, and a note of anything you have noticed: noises, warning lights or leaks.

3

Drop the car off

Most services take 1 to 3 hours. There is customer parking, a waiting area, and shops nearby if you would rather stretch your legs.

4

Hear back from us

We report what we found, explain anything that needs attention and only go ahead with extra work once you approve it.

A courtesy car or local pick-up and drop-off may be available by prior arrangement, so ask when you book.

Car Service Cost FAQs

It depends on the car and the service that is due. A basic service on a small petrol car costs the least, while logbook and major services on diesels, European cars and hybrids cost more. We give a firm quote for your vehicle before booking it in.

Sometimes, if it really covers what your car needs. Check that the price includes the correct oil grade, a new filter and a proper inspection. If it does not, you are paying for an oil change with a service sticker.

Follow the logbook. For most cars that means every 6 to 12 months or every 10,000 to 15,000 km, whichever comes first. Short trips around Epping and stop-start traffic on High Street and Cooper Street are hard on oil, so do not stretch the interval.

Generally 1 to 3 hours, depending on the vehicle and the service. Major services and cars that need extra work approved on the day can take longer.
